The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.
Video review technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Competitors will gain the right to challenge certain decisions made by the official, echoing the system already in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This development arrives only a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year role of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review specific situations, including:
- Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
- Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.
Importantly, there is no limit on the number of challenges a player can request.
A Recent Example
An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.
The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
The umpire watched a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.
Additional Innovations
A further innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was out or in.
Finally, with exactly 100 days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
