United Kingdom Broadens Toxic Alcohol Poisoning Advisory Roster with Eleven Nations
British Foreign Office has included an additional eleven new nations to its travel alert register regarding the risks of industrial alcohol poisoning from tainted spirits.
The revised advisory covers Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following what officials describe as "a worldwide rise in the incidence of reported cases" of methanol poisoning.
Just a few weeks ago, officials had already included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing register, in response to a number of notable cases such as the deadly demise of half a dozen travelers in Laos in 2024.
Travelers are being cautions that even minimal doses of industrial alcohol can result in permanent eye damage or loss of life within twelve to forty-eight hours.
Exactly what is Toxic Alcohol and In what way is it Used?
Methanol is a poisonous substance typically employed in coolant, windscreen washer fluid, and thinner. This substance is not meant for ingestion.
While it is inherently formed during the production of alcoholic drinks, reputable manufacturers bring it down to minimal, harmless amounts for human consumption through the purification method.
Yet in certain nations, it is surreptitiously added into beverages to cut costs, and as it is tasteless and scentless, it is impossible to identify.
Authorities' Advice for Tourists
Authorities representative Hamish Falconer emphasized that every traveler should be aware of the symptoms of toxic alcohol toxicity.
"If you're drinking spirits abroad, opt for well-known venues and refrain from local brews or free shots," the minister warned.
"In case something seems unusual, for example a hangover that's far more intense than usual or blurred eyesight – contact a doctor immediately."
The full roster of destinations noted as carrying a threat of methanol poisoning presently covers: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
