The Tooth Fairy Story Review: Cartoon Journey with a Sprinkling of Family-Friendly Tween Love Story

Throughout this cartoon adventure aimed at tweens, the fairy community focuses on gathering baby teeth of sleeping youngsters and leaving treasure under their pillows. Skateboarding youthful nonconformist fairy Van (voiced by Booboo Stewart) is less than thrilled about devoting his life to gathering baby teeth—a sentiment that’s completely understandable. He’s only slightly more curious about the financial workings of the situation: the fairies hand over the molars to mysterious goblins, who supply gold in exchange. But Van’s curiosity is piqued when he catches sight of a goblin (played by Larkin Bell), who turns out to be not at all the hideous gnome he had imagined.

An Unlikely Connection and Common Enemy

Everything is prepared for an adventure with a light sprinkling of teen romance (even though it remains very much suitable for children). The goblin and fairy communities are estranged from each other, and there’s nothing like the thrill of the forbidden to unite beings together. The two species as seen here are incredibly similar, yet each holds prejudiced beliefs about the opposite side. Fairies are said to be entitled types, given to stealing anything they want, while goblins are allegedly stupid, foul-smelling, and primitive, but are in fact bright and advanced in technology.

Naturally, this scenario requires a common enemy to join forces against, and this is duly provided by a group of vicious spiders, voiced by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. There’s no beating about the bush with these guys: they want to eat the goblins and fairies, and they serve as quite savage, if not especially competent, villains.

Target Audience and Final Thoughts

You won’t find all that many animated films targeting the kind of audience that is starting to experience early romances, but are not old enough for whatever teenagers view these days in lieu of Twilight. Should your youngster is in the right age bracket, this is unlikely to be their next all-time fave, but it’s a decent choice.

The Tooth Fairy Story arrives in movie theaters in Scotland from 10 October and the rest of the UK from 24 October.
