Marnus Labuschagne Left Out from Australia's ODI Squad Versus India

Marnus Labuschagne has been dropped from Australia's three-match ODI series facing India, with in-form Queensland teammate Matt Renshaw receiving a surprise inclusion.

Performance Issues Result in Omission

Selectors dropped Labuschagne from the ODI team following being dismissed for one in each of his two innings during the top-end series against South Africa in August. He has a top score of 47 in his last 10 ODI batting appearances.

The 31-year-old has played 68 one-day internationals and accumulated 1,871 ODI runs at an average of 34.64 runs per dismissal, but will now continue to press his claims a return to the Test side ahead of the Ashes starting in Perth on 21 November.

Renshaw's Return and Other Squad Updates

Labuschagne has shown signs of a resurgence with 160 for Queensland in the Sheffield Shield this week, while Renshaw also hit a hundred for the Bulls in the same game against Tasmania.

Renshaw is in line to make his ODI debut in the upcoming series against India after previously being selected in an ODI squad in 2022.

Renshaw has played 14 Test matches with the most recent appearance in India in 2023 but is also aiming for a Test return as Australia look for a fix to their batting top-order problems.

Bowling Additions and Injury Updates

Left-arm quick Mitchell Starc returns for the ODI series against India after having time off since performing well for Australia in the whitewash of West Indies in July.

BBL performer Mitch Owen might get his ODI debut after being concussed in the build-up to Australia’s last 50-over series against South Africa.

ODI captain Pat Cummins continues to be absent as he works to regain fitness from a back injury by the time to captain Australia in the first Ashes Test in November.

Team Announcement Strategy and Schedule

Australia have announced a squad for only the first two T20s against India with the Ashes approaching, although Glenn Maxwell will miss all of the five-match series due to a wrist injury suffered in New Zealand.

Mitch Marsh will lead both the ODI and T20 teams after smashing a century in the final game against New Zealand to secure a two-nil victory last week.

“We have named a squad for the ODI series and initial two matches of the T20 series as there will be player management through the later stages of the series as individuals prepare for the summer through Sheffield Shield cricket,” selection chief George Bailey said.
“The bulk of the T20 squad will stay as a group as it’s an important period in the preparation for the T20 World Cup next year, however we are trying to strike a balance to ensure we simultaneously get ready specific players for the Test series ahead.”

Australia’s three-game ODI series against India starts on 19 October in Perth, before the opponents play five T20 internationals from 29 October.
