Exceptional Crimson Electrical Discharge Photographed in the Heavens
A team of image specialists in New Zealand have recorded images of red lightning, one of the rarest light phenomena globally, where glowing scarlet illuminations manifest in the sky.
An Unforgettable Night of Discovery
The photographers began their evening to photograph the Milky Way over the unique geological structures in the southern region of the country on a specific autumn evening, when they chanced upon the rare phenomenon.
They thought they would be lucky to get good weather that evening, but their expedition became “a night to remember,” one photographer stated.
Upon examining his images for a stellar landscape and found he had photographed crimson electrical bursts,” he noted. “The discovery was astounding – we experienced screaming and shouting and various reactions in the night.”
Understanding Red Sprites
These crimson flashes are electrical discharges in the higher atmospheric layers, produced by storm systems. In contrast to traditional lightning that aims at the ground, these events ascend towards the higher altitudes, creating shapes that look like vertical forms, carrots or even jellyfish. The first photograph of a red sprite was captured – by chance – in that year, by a team at the an educational institution.
Fleeting and Dreamlike Sightings
The phenomena last for such a short time – persisting for a mere instant – that they are seldom seen to the naked eye, but an individual had a lucky break. “By chance, I was gazing directly at an occurrence when it took place – pure chance viewing the correct area of the sky and I witnessed a brief red flash,” he said.
Observing the events was a goal for this individual, an award-winning nocturnal imaging specialist. “It appears as if you’re seeing something that is not real, it appears mystical … it’s this very deep red colour that is there for a split second, so it is captivating to observe.”
Advanced and Artistic Mastery
Recording a red sprite requires a expertise in specialized camera skills, as well as an understanding of scientific principles and creative flare, the individual explained. “It’s a really involved form of imaging that’s highly fulfilling as well.”
Another photographer remarked it was counted as the “most amazing after-dark experiences” of his life. “I could see the Milky Way illuminating above the skyline while these giant scarlet filaments of illumination moved above a thunderstorm far on the horizon,” he described.
A One-of-a-Kind Photographic Achievement
To his knowledge, there are no other images capturing crimson flashes and the night sky of the south in a single image.
“It was one of those moments when you know you are seeing something you are unlikely to ever witness again.”
