A Single Apple Device Guided Law Enforcement to Criminal Network Suspected of Exporting Approximately Forty Thousand Stolen UK Mobile Devices to China
Authorities state they have dismantled an worldwide syndicate alleged of moving up to 40,000 snatched mobile phones from the United Kingdom to the Far East over the past year.
In what law enforcement labels the UK's largest ever operation against mobile device theft, a group of 18 have been taken into custody and over 2K snatched handsets located.
Authorities suspect the criminal group could be responsible for shipping as much as 50% of all phones stolen in the capital - a location where the majority of phones are stolen in the Britain.
The Investigation Triggered by An Individual Device
The probe was initiated after a target tracked a pilfered device the previous year.
This took place on the day before Christmas and a person digitally traced their stolen iPhone to a distribution center near London's major airport, a detective revealed. The security there was willing to cooperate and they found the phone was in a crate, among nearly 900 additional handsets.
Officers determined the vast majority of the devices had been snatched and in this instance were being transported to the Asian financial hub. Further shipments were then intercepted and authorities used forensics on the parcels to pinpoint a pair of individuals.
Intense Arrests
Once authorities targeted the two men, police bodycam footage showed law enforcement, some carrying electroshock weapons, carrying out a dramatic mid-road interception of a vehicle. Inside, authorities discovered devices wrapped in foil - a method by criminals to carry pilfered phones undetected.
The individuals, the two citizens of Afghanistan in their 30s, were indicted with plotting to receive stolen goods and working together to conceal or remove stolen merchandise.
During their detention, multiple handsets were located in their automobile, and roughly another two thousand handsets were found at addresses linked to them. A third man, a 29-year-old citizen of India, has subsequently been charged with the same offences.
Growing Mobile Device Theft Epidemic
The figure of phones snatched in the capital has nearly increased threefold in the last four years, from twenty-eight thousand six hundred nine in two years ago, to eighty thousand five hundred eighty-eight in this year. Three-quarters of all the mobile devices taken in the United Kingdom are now taken in the capital.
More than 20M people travel to the metropolis annually and famous landmarks such as the theatre district and political hub are prolific for handset theft and robbery.
An increasing need for pre-owned handsets, locally and overseas, is believed to be a key reason for the surge in pilfering - and numerous targets end up failing to recover their handsets again.
Rewarding Illegal Business
We're hearing that some criminals are stopping dealing drugs and transitioning to the mobile device trade because it's more profitable, an authority figure stated. If you steal a phone and it's valued at several hundred, it's clear why offenders who are proactive and seek to capitalize on recent criminal trends are moving toward that sector.
Top authorities said the syndicate deliberately chose iPhones because of their monetary value internationally.
The probe revealed street thieves were being paid up to £300 per device - and authorities stated snatched handsets are being traded in Mainland China for as much as four thousand pounds each, since they are connected and more desirable for those seeking to evade censorship.
Police Response
This is the largest crackdown on handset robbery and theft in the United Kingdom in the most unprecedented series of actions law enforcement has ever undertaken, a top official stated. We have disrupted illegal organizations at all levels from street-level thieves to international organised crime groups shipping many thousands of snatched handsets each year.
Many targets of handset robbery have been doubtful of authorities - like the metropolitan force - for inadequate response.
Common grievances entail officers refusing to cooperate when individuals notify the precise current positions of their stolen phone to the police using Apple's Find My iPhone or comparable monitoring systems.
Personal Account
The previous year, a person had her phone pilfered on a central London thoroughfare, in central London. She stated she now feels anxious when coming to the city.
It's very disturbing coming to this location and obviously I don't know the people surrounding me. I'm concerned about my purse, I'm anxious about my handset, she said. In my opinion authorities could be implementing a lot more - maybe installing further security cameras or checking if there are methods they have covert operatives in order to tackle this issue. I believe due to the figure of cases and the quantity of individuals reaching out with them, they lack the manpower and ability to deal with all these cases.
