2026 Declared the Era of the Amphibian Adventure.
While I found the recent developer-focused presentation was undoubtedly entertaining, my main revelation was a personal epiphany: I am convinced that 2026 will be the definitive year for frogs in video games.
Exactly five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these hoppy characters. Given that a gathering of frogs is termed an army, it appears they are taking over the industry.
The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians
Croaking characters are not at all new to the world of games. From the arcade classic Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a niche presence. But, their prevalence has noticeably surged in recent times.
A quick search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an overwhelming flood of results. Granted, some of these are novelty titles, a sizable number are legitimate amphibian adventures.
Charting the Croak Comeback
To quantify this trend, I conducted a detailed review into the recent history of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My approach was based on clear indicators, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.
The data tell a compelling story: a steady increase from under 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.
This significant surge prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The amphibian's elevated place in the cultural zeitgeist is somewhat evident elsewhere, such as the popularity of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. Yet, the wave in gaming seems particularly pronounced.
Designing for a Sticky Tongue
Frankly, this is a movement I can fully endorse. Frogs possess built-in appealing traits for game developers.
- Unique Characters: They are incredibly easy to be designed as endearing characters that frequently end up as a fan favorite in any game.
- Dynamic Mechanics: Their stretchy limbs and sticky tongues enable a wide array of unique mechanics.
Several the featured titles smartly employ these traits. Take the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.
What the Future Holds
So, what does this mean for 2026? With five frog games confirmed for release before the year has even begun—and the potential for more—the stage is set for it to be the most significant year yet.
If these games perform well—and based on past trends, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we could very well be entering a true frog gaming renaissance.
